âProfessor Roza, you canât show up without your significant other and not expect me to take advantage.â Mrs. Singh, the chair of the hospital fundraising committee, linked her arm through his. A networking genius, she steered them toward the event coverage personnel in the ballroom.
âSmile.â She angled her head, turned, and smiled again. âThere. Now my husband will be jealous and shower me with attention all week.â
âOne week?â Rafael leaned in, kissed her cheek, and paused long enough for a few more flashes to go off. âYou should be adored every day.â
âAfter forty years, I need to up the ante.â She offered her other cheek.
Rafael laughed and obliged.
âI think thatâll cover me for the month.â Her eyes twinkled as she showed him to his spot. âYour other guests have already arrived.â
âMy other guests?â
âDaniela Bustamante and her husband, Fred.â She gestured toward the couple at his table.
âYes, of course.â Rafael glanced at them. âThank you, Mrs. Singh.â
âThank you for being a valued donor. You still have an empty seat at your table. It would be a shame to let it go to waste. Can I send someone to fill in?â
âAbsolutely.â Unbuttoning his jacket, Rafael sat across from his guests. âThe more, the merrier. Right, Professor Bustamante?â
âRight.â The woman gave him a bright smile.
âAre you feeling better, Fred?â He asked her companion.
âOh yes. Much better.â He smoothed the sleeve of his cardigan. âA bit chilly, though. Itâs the air-conditioning, you know? Hot outside, cold inside. One never knows what to wear.â
âLetâs cut to the chase. Youâre not Professor Bustamante,â Rafael said to the woman. She was at least a decade older. âAnd youâre not Fred.â
âNo. Weâre not.â They stared back at him.
âDid the two of you crash the gala?â
âWell.â The man leaned over and lowered his voice. âItâs our first time in Los Angeles andâ¦â
âWe just wanted to see what was going on,â his partner piped in. âWe were walking on the beach and spotted the car by the entrance. Flowers spilling out of the hood, the windows, the trunk. So bright and whimsical. Everyone was flocking to take pictures, so we thought weâd take a few shots too. Then we spotted Marwan Hussein.â Hand on her heart, she closed her eyes and sighed.
âAnd Diane Bergen,â the man continued. âAnd that singer⦠Whatâs her name? The one who toppled off stage because her headgear was so heavy.â
âWe just wanted an autograph. When the lady asked if we were on the guest list, l mumbled something, and wellâ¦here we are. Iâm Judy, by the way. And this is my husband, Ken.â
âRafael.â He extended his hand.
âRafael, weâll leave as soon as your guests arrive.â
âNo need,â Rafael replied. âFred is recovering from surgery, and Professor Bustamante didnât feel like attending without him.â
âSo, we can stay?â Judy stuffed her handkerchief back inside her purse. âI donât have to turn on the waterworks, Ken.â
âWe were all set to play absentminded seniors,â her husband confided. âIt gets us out of sticky situations.â
âNo doubt you get into a lot of those.
